(male annoucer): live from the bay area's news station this is kron 4 news. >> top stories we are following on this tuesday, august 27th. the blaze continues to be a battle. as dangerous flames continue to spread in and around yosemite national park. we'll have the latest on the >> and we are just *one day away from the bay bridge being completely closed for what crews are doing to make sure the new span is completely safe. >> we begin this morning with breaking news out of east oakland. fire crews are currently battling a two-alarm fire at a house near international boulevard. it started about an hour ago on the 12-hundred block of 50th avenue. fire crews say the fire is on the first and second stories of the house. so far, no word on any injuries. kron four does have a crew on scene, we'll bring you

available. >> we are waking up to mostly clear skies. there is a minimal fall along the coastline. there really is the extent of it. it is a pretty comparable to what we saw before. we are starting out in 60's and oakland. mid 50s currently in santa rosa. satellite and radar shows that the fog will clear early. we will see sunshine earlier compared to what we saw yesterday. in terms of your afternoon high you can expect them to be just a few degrees warmer than yesterday. for the upper 60s to that for downtown san francisco. your 7 day around the bay forecast highlights that the temperatures will be on a cooling trend for the rest of the week. if

take a look at the weekend. by sunday, the warmest will be in the upper 70's. >> we will continue to monitor the forecast. and we are not monterey any hot spots. here is a live shot of the bay bridge toll plaza. if the traffic is very light. the san mateo bridges moving well but the message signed as active due to the bay bridge closure tomorrow. as we go over to the golden gate bridge, southbound 1 1/2, the visibility is good. down in the south bay closer to the capitol expressway we do have a wrong way the vehicle. >> now on to the latest with the wildfire burning in yosemite national park. nearly 161-thousand acres. making it the 13th- largest fire in state history.

the flames are now 20- percent contained. that number is up from 15- percent. crews are relying on heavy air tankers to help stop the spread of the fire. governor jerry brown toured some of the burned area. evacuations are still in effect for communities near the fire. kron 4's john fenoglio takes a look at critical water and power sources for san francisco. which are still threatened as the as the rim fire continues to grow. >> this provides drinking water to 2.6 million people. as of the so-called rimfire works its way, this proves that the water supply may be in danger. >> we have a contingency plan in place. just in case the war shuts down. if this is not sufficient have other areas in that are on standby.

>> with more of debris, the water is being diverted away to avoid contamination. san francisco still remains under a state of emergency. we do not want to create any panic, this is our ordinary operation at this point. >> then we storm water and local areas and we want to have more water for the bay area. >> we were delivering watewhilee water is safe to drink for now there is a worst-case scenario. >> the worst case would bay when the fire has actually

workers will transition from the old roadway. with the new eastern span. the bridge is set to re-open -- on tuesday, september third at 5:00 am -- hal >> while working on a permanent fix for the broken bolts on the bay bridge long term. the temporary fix is going into place now. steel plates have been inserted, so the bridge can open the day after labor day. shear keys and bearings are supposed to work together, to help absorb seismic energy. and allow the bridge to move during an earthquake. bolts, the bearings on the bridge run the risk of moving too much, so the steel plates, also known as shims, have been placed inside the bearings. to allow them to still move. although the bearings will not be able to rock to their full extent, they will still have some leeway.

and rattled nerves near reno. the 4 point 2 magnitude quake struck just before 6 last night. it was centered about 2 miles northeast of spanish springs. the earthquake was felt by residents in the reno and sparks areas. and as far as placerville. there were no immediate injuries. the >> they just artists school, but already, students in the midwest are getting out of class early this week because of the heat. if schools and nebraska, iowa, and the dakotas and illinois are letting kids out of school or early. if temperatures in those days are going close0 degrees. some classrooms and i have air-conditioning. school officials say that they will make do and will not weighed into the school start date debate. >> it is very hot. it is just hard, we are sweating.

issues, no delays. again, we have an injury accident southbound 1 01 and it looks like we are picking up a little bit of slow traffic leading to cupertino. >> a second 16 year-old is arrested in connection with the beating death of a 88 year-old world war two veteran. he is scheduled to make a court appearance today. demetrius glenn turned himself into thursday night, the same day the veteran died of his injuries. he was wounded in the battle inokinawa, was beaten his vehicle as he waited for a friend and a parking lot. both teams will

be tried as adults. >> the rodeo clown that made fun of president obama at a missouri fair. is facing accusations he was dis- respectful to the president tuffy gessling. a white man dressed in a mask of the nations president who is african american. offending a lot of people. gessling says, he has been banned from the missouri state fair. since that rodeo show. he says he has also received five death threats. bu he is finally speaking out. saying he never meant any harm. he hasn't worked since the missouri state fair, but plenty of support has been building too. he has an upcoming show in jefferson city, missouri. >> students return for the first full year of classes following the deadly shooting at sandy hook elementary school last year; their old school building is being torn down and replaced with a new facility. in december 2012, 20 year- old adam

m lanza shot 26 people inside sandy hook, including 20 students. the school has been closed since the mass killing. in may a new town taskforce approved a plan to tear down the school and build a new one. students will return to school in the location and in a different building. >> civil rights activists says millions of at-risk students could fall through the cracks as a result of the obama administration's decision to allow states to ignore parts of the no child left behind education law. the campaign for high school equity says waivers have allowed almost 2,300 schools

>> three months after undergoing a double lung transplant, a 10-year-old pennsylvania girl is finally scheduled to go home from the hospital. sarah murnaghan has cystic fibrosis and got the new lungs when a judge inter- vened in a lawsuit over transplant protocol. her case changed the rules transplants. sarah spoke to jason carroll surgery. sarah still has a long road to recovery. her mother says has been taken off oxygen, although she still gets support from a machine that helps her breathe. and has started to walk with the help of a walker. >> still ahead on the kron four morning news. one college sophomore is getting a lot of attention after a video of him giving a speech to an incoming freshman class goes viral. his message to new

the nasdaq fell a fraction of a point. and the s and p 500 lost nearly seven points. opening bell at 6:30. >> good news for workers investing in a retirement plan. average 401-k balances were up more than ten percent during the second quarter of this year. employees who have consistently stashed cash are even better off. according to fidelity investment, workers who have been employed and in a 401-k plan for at least 10 years had average balances of 211-thousand-800- dollars at the end of june. that's up 19 percent from a >> congress has been warned that the government will run out of money to pay its bills in mid-october unless it raises the country's borrowing limit. which is capped at $16.7 trillion. treasury secretary jacob lew passed this message in a letter to speaker john boehner. the letter said the government was running out of accounting maneuvers it has used to avoid hitting the borrowing limit. he pressed congress to act so treasury can keep paying the government's bills.

this could have been part of a larger criminal operation. >> the state senate has approved a bill that would require drivers to stay at least three feet away from bicyclists when they are passing in the same direction. lawmakers approved ab1371 by democratic assemblyman steven bradford of gardena on a 31-7 vote monday, despite gov. jerry brown's veto of a nearly identical bill last year. the governor had said he is worried about the possibility of increased crashes if drivers cross the center line or slow down too much to pass cyclists. sen. mark desaulnier, who carried the bill in the senate, said california is one of 32 states that have so-called "safe distance laws" to protect bicyclists, but at least 22 states specify the three-foot buffer as a safe distance. >> coco crisp and daric barton each drove in two runs, and the athletics beat miguel cabrera and the detroit tigers 8-6. cabrera hit his 43rd homer, bolstering his pursuit of another triple crown, but barton had a tiebreaking rbi single in oakland's two-run sixth inning.

receives the highest award the military has to offer. what the solider has to say about his trip to the white house. that story coming up on the a bay area army sergeant has received the nation's highest military award. president obama presented staff sergeant ty carter, from antioch, with the medal of honor at the white house. the army says, during a afghanistan, carter ran ammunition and risked his own life to save fellow soldiers. carter spoke after the ceremony. >> a soldier or veteran suffered from stress, he is one of the most dedicated men that you will meet. they are not--they are hurting and they're living with others did not. know that they, we are not defeated. we are resilience and we will emerge. >> carter was one of 45 soldiers who survived that battle in 2009.

it came in just before 3:00 a.m.. when firefighters arrived here they did see smoke and flames and they were able to get inside the home. there were able to knock down the flames and about 30 minutes. according to the fire department, this house was taken at the time of the fire. they stated that they had boarded up windows. they stated that among the been some squatters and side of the home that may have been the cause of the fire. fire investigators are here on scene during their investigation. the good news is that no one was hurt, the firefighters remain on the scene just to make sure that they are not in on any potential hot spots. the good nils is that, this fire is out and no one was injured. they believe that
